Kosovo has 1 million 586 thousand 659 residents, according to the latest population, household and housing census. Of them, 795 thousand 45 are men and 791 thousand 614 are women.

These preliminary data were presented today by the acting head of the Kosovo Statistics Agency, Avni Kastrati, in a conference attended by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, ministers, mayors and ambassadors.

According to this census, the average age for 2024 is 34.82 (an increase of 4.85 years). There are no changes in the gender ratio. Men dominate.

Now the country is dominated by the population of the age group 16-64 years.

The three municipalities with the highest population density are Fushë Kosova, Mamusha and Prishtina.

The number of apartments is 560 thousand. The number of households is 353 thousand households, while the average number of members per household is 4.5 inhabitants.

Kastrati said that in the northern municipalities of Kosovo: Leposaviq, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and North Mitrovica, there was a large boycott. He added that the final results are expected to be published in December.

“The results may differ slightly from the preliminary data”, said Kastrati.

Meanwhile, the diaspora registration process is still ongoing, until the end of August.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti assessed this process as very important for the country, emphasizing the impact on decisions.

“Real statistics are like GPS for our future. With the correct data, we are sure that we will not lose our way and find our destination… Without qualitative statistics, even decisions can be inaccurate and not qualitative… This registration is also an example of the cooperation and harmony of all the people who participated in this process so important for our country and our future”, said Kurti.

The population census was conducted from April 5 to May 24. This time, there were seven questionnaires to fill out. In this registration, the questionnaire on war damages and the questionnaire on the registration of compatriots have been added.

The Statistics Agency justified the collection of these data with the importance of making better policies for the country, planning the budget and investments, improving living conditions in the country and for foreign investments.

According to the law, every resident of the Republic of Kosovo is obliged, during the Census, to provide the registration officer with all the correct data in the Population Census questionnaires. For those who have refused to provide the data or have provided incorrect data, fines will follow.

The last census of the population in Kosovo was done in 2011, according to which the total number of inhabitants in Kosovo was 1 million 739 thousand 825. In this census, the inhabitants of municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo were not included – Leposavić, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and North Mitrovica – since at that time they had rejected the process.
