Today marks the 15th anniversary of the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, which concluded that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law.

In a majority vote, the ICJ judges ruled in favor of Kosovo, firmly rejecting Serbia’s claim that the 2008 declaration constituted a breach of international norms.

The decision was read by then-President of the Court, Hisashi Owada.

Kosovo declared its independence on February 17, 2008.
