On April 5, 2007, the Assembly of Kosovo adopted the Declaration on Determining Kosovo’s Status, expressing its support for the proposal of chief international negotiator Martti Ahtisaari.
The proposal, submitted on February 2, 2007 to Pristina and Belgrade, outlined that Kosovo would become a multi-ethnic society governed democratically, with full respect for the rule of law, the highest standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and a commitment to peaceful coexistence and prosperity for all its inhabitants.
A key moment followed on June 10, 2007, when U.S. President George W. Bush visited Tirana and publicly stated that Kosovo would gain independence.
After a period of negotiations and diplomatic developments, Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008, marking one of the most significant milestones in its modern history.
This anniversary, 19 years after the adoption of the declaration, represents an important step toward statehood and the consolidation of Kosovo’s institutions.
