A total of 20 bodies, several of them decapitated, have been discovered beside a road in Sinaloa, western Mexico. This grim discovery comes as a conflict between two factions of a drug cartel has left 1,200 dead since September, according to local prosecutors.
Four decapitated bodies were found on the road, while another 16, including one also decapitated, were located inside a van, the prosecutor’s office stated.
The conflict, involving two factions of the Sinaloa cartel, has resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 1,400 disappearances. The clashes pit the sons of the cartel’s founder, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán—who is serving a life sentence in the U.S.—against supporters of “El Mayo” Zambada, who later assumed leadership of the cartel and was also recently arrested.
The latest wave of violence erupted less than two months after “El Mayo” was apprehended in the U.S. He claims that “El Chapo’s” son abducted him and transferred him to the U.S. via private plane.
According to the Mexican government, a group of close associates of Ovidio Guzmán, one of “El Chapo’s” sons who was himself extradited to the U.S. in September 2023, surrendered to U.S. authorities in May as part of “negotiations” with the U.S. Department of Justice.
