Today marks 28 years since the Student Movement protests of 1997, a defining moment in Kosovo’s path toward freedom.

The demonstrations, organized by the Student Movement, were held to protest the Serbian occupation of Kosovo and demand the return of students to their university facilities, from which they had been expelled in the early 1990s under the regime of Slobodan Milošević.

At the time, Serbian authorities had imposed violent measures, expelled students and professors from the University of Prishtina, and enforced a Serbian curriculum.

The protests are remembered as one of the most important acts of resistance, symbolizing peaceful defiance against oppression. Serbian police responded with force against both students and professors, but the protests left a lasting legacy in Kosovo’s struggle for independence.
