A group of approximately 54 children and 30 adults attempted to swim from Morocco to Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa, through rough seas and fog, according to Spanish television station RTVE. Spanish Civil Guard boats rescued some of the people from the water, while others successfully completed the perilous journey.

Local Authorities Urge Spanish Government for Help

The children, most of whom are Moroccan, were taken to temporary shelters in Ceuta. Local authorities are now calling on the Spanish government to provide assistance in managing the situation.

“Don’t leave us alone. This is a matter for the state. This must be resolved,” said Juan Vivas from Ceuta’s regional government to reporters, as reported by Reuters.

Ceuta and Melilla, another Spanish enclave in North Africa, represent Europe’s only land borders with Africa. Migrants frequently attempt to cross into these territories as a route to reach Europe.

Moroccan citizens caught crossing are typically returned to Morocco immediately, unless they are minors or seeking asylum. Individuals of other nationalities are taken to special centers, where they are housed and released after a few days.
