Today marks the 28th anniversary of the “Dukagjini Epic,” a key battle fought on March 24, 1998, between the Kosovo Liberation Army and Serbian forces in the village of Gllogjan.
The battle unfolded after Serbian forces surrounded the area, with the primary target believed to be the home of the Haradinaj family. It became one of the first major frontal confrontations of the Kosovo war.
On that day, several fighters were killed, including Him Haradinaj, Gazmend Mehmetaj, and Agron Mehmetaj, who are honored as martyrs.
Commemorative events
To mark the anniversary, the municipality of Deçan, together with the OVL-UÇK, is organizing a series of commemorative activities.
At 11:00, tributes and homages will take place at the Memorial Complex “Dëshmorët e Kombit” in Gllogjan, followed by the central commemorative ceremony at 12:00.
The “Dukagjini Epic” remains a significant symbol of resistance and sacrifice in Kosovo’s modern history, marking an early and decisive moment in the broader conflict of 1998–1999.
