“There is a real risk of war as Serbia is establishing closer ties with Russia and China and the Republic of Kosovo wants to join NATO as soon as possible,” its prime minister said today at the Defense Conference in London. .
Albin Kurti said that during the last 25 years, the Republic of Kosovo has been strengthened with the help of allies and international partners such as the USA, Great Britain and the European Union. However, he said that Serbia has intensified its cooperation with Russia, China and Iran.
“Serbia is currently establishing closer and closer ties with Russia and China. At a time when we are experiencing war in Europe, we cannot ignore the threat of another war in a region that knows very well what this means,” he said.
He told delegates on the third day of the conference held at King’s College in London, that Serbia’s alignment with Russia, its “destructive approach” to the Republic of Kosovo and its “rapid and large armament” are indications that it aims for escalation with a view to realizing its territorial ambitions.
“The threat is not just theoretical, the risk of a new war is real. The cohesion and sincerity that we saw 25 years ago must be renewed today.”
He said that the Republic of Kosovo is seeking to join NATO and said that countries that support democratic values ”must close the political and practical vacuum that makes authoritarian figures believe that an attack on another European country is viable.”
“We want to join NATO as soon as possible. … we must work together for Kosovo to join NATO in this decade and contribute to security and benefit as well”, Kurti said.
