The Pentagon has integrated a special version of ChatGPT into its main artificial intelligence platform, giving U.S. military personnel and civilian employees access to the technology for secure work involving controlled but unclassified information.
The dedicated version, known as ChatGPT Mil, has been launched on the Pentagon’s GenAI.mil platform, where it joins other frontier AI systems, including Google’s Gemini. The platform is designed to support more than 3 million military and civilian personnel across the U.S. Department of Defense.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, ChatGPT Mil is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information, or CUI, at Impact Level 5 and is designed for secure, enterprise-wide use.
The system is intended primarily for document-heavy unclassified work, including planning, policy development, logistics and administration. Pentagon officials say the technology could help accelerate routine tasks and allow personnel to devote more time to higher-priority projects.
“ChatGPT Mil brings a familiar commercial experience into the Department’s secure environment, tailored to warfighter needs,” the Department of Defense said in its announcement.
Different AI models for different tasks
The Pentagon is pursuing a multi-model approach rather than relying on a single artificial intelligence system.
A Defense Department official told Defense One that different models may be better suited to different types of work. Gemini, for example, could be particularly useful for search functions and gathering information from multiple sources, while ChatGPT may be better suited for text-based and document-processing tasks.
Work on developing a version of ChatGPT suitable for use with controlled but unclassified information began in February 2026. The system was subsequently subjected to security and accreditation processes before its launch.
Possible uses across the military
Officials have outlined potential applications ranging from planning and logistics to administrative work and emergency coordination.
For example, AI tools could assist military commands with planning, resource allocation and coordination with other U.S. government agencies during disaster-response operations.
In logistics, ChatGPT Mil could help process large volumes of documentation, organize supply and maintenance information and assist with transportation requests.
However, the systems currently deployed on GenAI.mil are intended for enterprise and operational support rather than direct use in combat operations.
Separate and secure environment
ChatGPT Mil does not operate in the same environment as the commercial version of ChatGPT.
Instead, it has been deployed within a separate secure environment designed to handle controlled but unclassified information. The platform’s security framework includes controls over infrastructure, users and the types of data that can be accessed by the AI system.
The launch is part of the Pentagon’s broader effort to expand the use of frontier artificial intelligence across the U.S. military while maintaining security safeguards and human responsibility for consequential decisions.
