Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić hosted a dinner on Sunday to mark 65 years since the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, emphasizing Serbia’s commitment to sovereignty, international law and an independent foreign policy.
In a message published on Instagram, Vučić said the world had changed significantly since the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, but argued that the importance of sovereignty, international law and equality among states had not diminished.
“Sixty-five years have passed since the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement. The world has changed, but the importance of sovereignty, international law and equality has not diminished,” Vučić said.
“At a time of great challenges, more dialogue, mutual respect and a willingness to find what connects us are needed,” he added.
Vučić said Serbia continued to pursue an independent foreign policy while protecting what he described as its state and national interests.
He added that Serbia was prepared to cooperate with all countries that respect its political choices.
“Serbia pursues an independent policy, protects its state and national interests, and extends a hand to everyone who respects our choices,” Vučić said.
The Serbian president also expressed appreciation for countries that have maintained close relations with Serbia and supported its position during difficult periods.
“This gathering is an opportunity to give new strength to our long-standing ties, open space for more concrete cooperation and demonstrate how important their value can be for generations to come,” Vučić said.
The event comes as Serbia continues to seek to balance relations with the European Union, Russia, China and countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, while frequently presenting its foreign policy as one based on independence and strategic neutrality.
The anniversary also highlights Belgrade’s historical connection to the Non-Aligned Movement, whose first summit was held in Belgrade in 1961 and was closely associated with Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and other leaders of the movement.
