CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria questioned Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić about Serbia’s past during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, with particular emphasis on Srebrenica.
At the beginning of the interview, CNN noted that Vučić has been in power for more than a decade. The report also addressed Serbia’s relations with Russia and China.
CNN also linked Serbia’s past to a period of “violent nationalism.”
During the conversation, Zakaria told Vučić that, in a significant part of Western public opinion, Serbia is still associated with the wars of the 1990s in the Balkans.
“When much of the Western world thinks about Serbia, they think about the wars in the Balkans, about what happened in places like Srebrenica, and there is a hope that Serbia has left that past behind,” Zakaria told the Serbian president.
This part of the report also featured footage of civilians with their hands bound, lying on the ground before being executed.
According to reports by Serbian media, part of the interview focused on the legacy of the wars, Srebrenica, and how Serbia is confronting that period.
