Violence erupted across France on Saturday during the final day of demonstrations against difficulties in the education system and the rising cost of living.

At least 1,200 people were arrested in what the French government described as an “escalation of violence”, while approximately 550,000 people took to the streets.

In Paris, major clashes with riot police continued into the evening, with officers using tear gas and water cannons against crowds.

Buildings were set on fire in the capital and other areas, including in Limoges, where a major fire at the city hall caused part of the roof to collapse.

Looting broke out in several cities, with widespread vandalism reported at municipal buildings and businesses.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said that 150 police officers had been injured during the unrest.

In Paris, the main march appeared to remain largely peaceful throughout the afternoon. A group of young demonstrators told the BBC that they were “pacifists” who were “just trying to change things, but nothing is moving”.

However, as the day progressed, some groups started fires in the streets and torched vehicles, including near iconic locations in the city centre, such as Place de la République.

Shops were looted, at least one restaurant was set on fire, and the BBC witnessed clashes between several groups.

Riot police were seen charging at a crowd in central Paris and striking several people with batons.
