Strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the Western Balkans’ European integration remain central priorities of the Berlin Process, the German Embassy in Kosovo has told KosovaPress.
In a response published on October 21, one day before the upcoming summit in Montenegro, the embassy said Germany aims to bring all six Western Balkan partners closer to membership in the European Union, with a focus on practical cooperation and improving citizens’ everyday lives.
“The Berlin Process is a key political platform for strengthening regional cooperation in the Western Balkans and supporting the region’s integration into the European Union,” the embassy said.
Germany’s clear objective, it added, is to bring all six Western Balkan partners closer to EU membership.
The initiative seeks to deliver tangible benefits for people across the region through stronger regional connections, greater freedom of movement and closer practical cooperation between countries.
Montenegro to Host 2026 Summit
The German Embassy welcomed Montenegro’s hosting of the summit, noting that the country is leading the Berlin Process in 2026 and has made progress in its EU accession negotiations.
“Montenegro is among the leading countries on the path towards EU membership and is leading the Berlin Process for 2026. Holding the summit in Montenegro sends a positive signal,” the embassy said.
It added that the development highlights the importance of shaping the future of the Berlin Process increasingly together with the region and from within the region itself.
Kosovo will be represented at the summit by Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
A Decade of Regional Cooperation
Launched by Germany in 2014, the Berlin Process aims to strengthen cooperation among Western Balkan countries and support their integration into the European Union.
The October 22 summit is expected to provide another opportunity for regional leaders to discuss cooperation and the next steps towards bringing the Western Balkans closer to the EU.
