Things can change from one moment to the next (regarding the recognition of Kosovo), considering Pedro Sanchez’s ‘changeable mind.’
This claim is made by the Madrid newspaper “La Razon” while reporting on the Catalan party Junts’ initiative for the recognition of Kosovo.
“The truth is that Kosovo has barely managed to secure recognition from 100 countries (96 to be exact), but it still hasn’t received the ‘yes’ from the EU’s five holdouts: Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Romania, and Slovakia,” writes the right-wing, conservative Madrid newspaper.
“So far, Spain has been far from supporting Kosovo, although if we consider Sanchez’s ‘changeable mind,’ things could change from one moment to the next. This is because during the Socialist leader’s administration, there have been diametric shifts in Foreign Policy with Morocco, and Junts wants to force a change also towards Kosovo,” writes “La Razon” further.
Junts’ initiative includes a response from the Spanish government from October 2021, articulating the official reasons for not recognizing Kosovo.
“Spain maintains the stance of not recognizing the unilateral declaration of independence adopted by Pristina in 2008 as a unilateral act. However, from a constructive approach, it considers that it is time to make significant efforts to resolve the issue of Kosovo’s territory within the framework of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina with an agreement that respects international law.”
Kosovo has in vain sought recognition from Spain, the latter referring to the EU dialogue for a solution in disputes with Serbia, which leaves a sense of “we’ll see.”
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, in “El Pais,” sought recognition from Madrid by trying to articulate the differences between Kosovo and Catalonia; as two completely different cases.
“Spain should and will recognize Kosovo. As our great writer Ismail Kadare said when he won the Prince of Asturias award: ‘Spain should never be compared with Serbia, because Serbia committed genocide in Kosovo,’” Kurti expressed in the Spanish newspaper.
“Spain should join the majority of EU and NATO member states that recognize Kosovo. It should not be in the minority. Twenty-two out of 27 EU members recognize Kosovo, as well as 26 out of 30 NATO member states. Spain should join the majority,” Kurti concluded.
