The human rights activist in Serbia, Sonja Biserko, has said that there are not many expectations from the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue meeting in Brussels.
“Actually, I don’t expect much from this meeting because the last 9 months have proven that Serbia is not very interested in the implementation of agreements, they have their reasons because they believe that international conflicts are volatile and can change in these changes can benefit their aspirations not only in this but in the entire region,” said Biserko.
Biserko says that this meeting was called by Josep Borrell because, according to her, he wants to seize the momentum, adding that the European Union has been more supportive of Serbia so far.
“I could be wrong, but I don’t expect much from this meeting, I hope it will be a continuation of not only practical things but which would bring Kosovo to an equal level with Serbia, because until now the EU has been more supportive of Serbia sanctioning Kosovo for not doing this or that.”
And she expects that there will be a more equal approach between the two countries, as she adds that Serbia is only “buying time” and is not concentrating on the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
“I hope it will be a more equal approach, because in reality Serbia is not really concentrating on the dialogue and is only buying time, because in reality they are not too worried if Kosovo achieves success in its sovereignty over the entire territory and this should to change because the Serbian community in Kosovo also feels abandoned and is frustrated by waiting,” added Biserko.
In a press conference on Monday, Josep Borrell was more specific, as he asked Serbia to be more constructive and requested the removal of the measures against Kosovo that have been imposed by the European Union (EU).
Biserko also says that Serbian citizens in Kosovo have been abandoned by Serbia and called this a frustrating fact for Serbs.
Meanwhile, he added that the fact that Serbia prevented Kosovo’s vote to be part of the Council of Europe is a surprise since the Serbs in Kosovo would also have the opportunity to address their problems.
“I can say that Serbia has abandoned its citizens in Kosovo by removing them from the Kosovo Institutions and not allowing them to participate in the referendum for the presidents, they are outside the system, this is a very frustrating fact for the Serbs because all we are waiting for something else and I don’t think that at this moment Serbia is ready to change something and we constantly criticize Kosovo for this, I am not saying that there is no problem from the Kosovar side, I think they should be more understanding for the side Kosovar and I am surprised how they tried and prevented the vote of Kosovo to be part of the Council of Europe because this would be an opportunity for the Serbs in Kosovo to address their problems,” declared Biserko.
