US military bases and personnel across Europe were put on heightened alert as new intelligence warned of a possible terrorist attack.

A US defense official confirmed to VOA that military facilities across US European Command (EUCOM) were raised to the “Charlie” level of protection, meaning an attack is possible.

The official did not elaborate on the content of the intelligence, but counterterrorism officials from many countries warned of growing threats, including those related to the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris.

The EUCOM announcement states that the increased security measures are the result of a combination of factors.

“The increase in preparedness is not related to any specific threat, but to several combined factors, such as major events – including the European Football Championship and the Olympic Games – and possible attacks by malicious individuals against various non-military targets in Europe.” , the statement said.

EUCOM advised personnel in Europe to “exercise caution at all times, report suspicious activity, follow State Department travel advisories, and take additional measures to mitigate personal risk.”

The U.S. defense official said the military is “taking additional steps to ensure that U.S. troops are vigilant both during work activities and during personal activities.” /REL
