Europe has turned its eyes again to compulsory military service. This is because the latest geopolitical developments in the world have forced him to reconsider the option, which had been abolished since the beginning of the 90s.

In the immediate aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the debate over conscription returned to Europe, with many countries beginning to consider whether its application would bolster national security. While defense budgets have shrunk, the readiness and ability of European militaries to respond to traditional threats has been questioned.

Among those that have reinstated compulsory service in recent years are Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden. While Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Switzerland, Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Norway have never suspended it, reports EuroNews.al.

Countries like Austria offer a choice between military and civilian service, a model that may be more feasible than other countries, which are in a difficult position due to the social and political consequences of compulsory service.
