In his office in Pristina, the head of the European Union office, Tomas Szunyog, for four years committed himself to Kosovo and Serbia achieving steps towards normalization.
However, the dialogue mediated by the European bloc has not reached expectations.
The last meeting in Brussels between Kurti and Vučić did not bring any results, so the parties continue to have diametrically opposed positions.
Despite the fact that the dialogue has stalled, the EU ambassador in Kosovo, Tomas Szunyog, even in his last days in this position, is optimistic about the future of this process.
“I am optimistic about the future of the dialogue process, I am convinced that if there is commitment we can go on the right path towards reconciliation. As you have seen during my mandate, I have been maximally committed to this issue because it is very important for Kosovo and Serbia to normalize relations”, said Szunyog to Tëvë1.
The European diplomat has made it clear that without the normalization of relations neither Kosovo nor Serbia can become part of the European Union.
At the same time, he is asking the parties to start implementing the agreements.
“I am making it clear once again that only through the complete normalization of relations Kosovo and Serbia can join the big European family. So if you are seriously committed to joining the European Union, you should engage more in dialogue and implement all agreements. But it must be said that until now the parties have not made sufficient progress in the implementation of the agreements”, he said.
Brussels considers the Ohrid agreement that the parties reached in 2023 as a great achievement.
Szunyogun will be succeeded by the Estonian diplomat, Aivo Orav, in the position of the EU’s special representative in Kosovo.
According to the EU, he will take office on September 1, 2024 and will have an initial term of two years, succeeding Tomas Szunyog, who has been in the post since 2020.
