The United States announced today that it has ordered the evacuation of non-essential personnel from Bangladesh as a precautionary measure following massive protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The State Department stated that the order was issued on Monday, clarifying that the U.S. embassy will remain open but with reduced operational capacity.

Washington had been warning Americans since last month not to travel to Bangladesh, citing unrest, crime, and terrorism.
