The healing mountains of Prevalla have been on fire for several days now, reports RKS.
Footage from the burning mountain after midnight shows that the fire is now much closer to the residents’ villas.
Firefighters from several cities in Kosovo have been on the scene for several days, but it appears that their intervention alone may not be sufficient to control the blaze.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Prizren, Shaqir Totaj, after a meeting with the Emergency Headquarters for extinguishing the fires in Prevalla, announced that he has been informed that the situation in the area is under control.
“I was informed by the headquarters that the situation is under control, and the high trees are not burning, which means that the risk is lower. Nevertheless, my team and I visited the area today to see the situation up close,” Totaj said.
He added that since this is a National Park, there are obligations for higher levels of government as well.
“Since we are dealing with a National Park, it implies that both national and international institutions, such as KFOR, have obligations, and the headquarters is in full coordination with all authorized actors handling this issue. The situation is being monitored, and no escalation is expected. Today, we plan to intervene and localize the fire to have it under control and to minimize any potential damage,” Totaj stated.
Fires in the Prevalla area have been active for several days, and institutions have also requested KFOR’s assistance for aerial intervention due to the unsuitable terrain.
