The U.S. Department of State (DOS) has reiterated its firm stance that the future of Kosovo and Serbia lies within the European Union institutions and that the EU-mediated dialogue is “the only way forward.”

A spokesperson for the State Department told Radio Free Europe that the U.S. “continues to strongly support the EU-facilitated dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia as the path to achieving a peaceful and productive relationship between the two countries.”

The DOS spokesperson also urged Kosovo and Serbia to “refrain from further escalatory rhetoric, uncoordinated actions, or legislative acts that undermine the normalization of their relations or that risk stability and security.”

During a statement at the end of last week, Vucic called for the reintegration of Serbs into Kosovo institutions, including their return to the Kosovo Regional Police Directorate for the north, the reinstatement of Serbian judges and prosecutors, and the holding of local elections in northern Kosovo.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti did not comment on Vucic’s demands, but the Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, from Kurti’s party, said that these demands are unconstitutional.
