Nataša Kandić, founder of the Humanitarian Law Center, highlighted the significance of Radislav Krstić’s letter admitting his role in the Srebrenica genocide. Krstić, former Drina Corps commander convicted by the Hague Tribunal, expressed remorse and acknowledged his part in the atrocities, even supporting the UN Resolution on Srebrenica and expressing a wish to pay respects at the Potočari Memorial.
Kandić emphasized that while Krstić’s sincerity might be questioned, the importance lies in his detailed admission of genocide, an act still largely denied by the Serbian state. Despite Krstić’s prominent role in the genocide, his statement has met with widespread indifference and silence in Serbia. According to Kandić, this reflects a deep reluctance by the Serbian government to acknowledge the genocide or recognize Krstić’s confession, viewing it as a betrayal of the nationalist narrative that still prevails.
