The official spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described President Vladimir Putin’s regime as a “disordered Russian government” after the Russian president signed a new nuclear doctrine for the Russian Federation on Tuesday.
In the doctrine, Russia states that it will treat “aggression from any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear country,” as an attack that could warrant a nuclear response, writes The Guardian, as reported by RKS.NEWS.
The spokesperson for Downing Street, who traditionally remains anonymous but speaks on behalf of the Prime Minister, said:
“It would be fair to say this is the latest example of the recklessness we have seen from the disordered Russian government. We remain steadfast in our support for Ukraine and its defense against unlawful invasion, and we have always said that the defense of the United Kingdom begins in Ukraine.
We are very clear that Vladimir Putin could end this war tomorrow. He could withdraw his troops, pull back his tanks, and end the attack and unnecessary bloodshed in both Ukraine and Russia. It is entirely in his hands. We would urge him to do so.”
Putin ordered changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine in the weeks leading up to the US elections.
On Tuesday morning, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the use of non-nuclear Western missiles by Ukrainian forces against the Russian Federation, according to the new doctrine, could lead to a nuclear response, calling for the new nuclear doctrine to be subject to thorough analysis abroad.
Peskov said that the update to the doctrine was necessary to bring the document in line with the current political situation.
