Following a high evaluation by UNESCO, the traditional dance “K’cimi i Tropojës” is now officially part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This marks a historic achievement and a great honor for Albanian culture, placing Tropoja and its unique art on the global stage.
Known also as “K’cim Veni,” “K’cimi i Tropojës” is a festive dance that has preserved its vitality for centuries. It includes elements of performing arts, oral traditions, rituals, and festive events. Over the years, this tradition has remained a symbol of identity and unity for the people of Tropoja and the Malësia e Gjakovës region.
The dance is performed during various ceremonial and social occasions, such as weddings, engagements, and local festivals. Its rhythmic movements, accompanied by the tupan (drum), çifteli (two-stringed instrument), and fyell (flute), symbolize the energy and joy of the community. Performances often include traditional clothing and red or yellow scarves, preserving the authenticity of the art form.
“K’cimi i Tropojës” thrives through transmission from generation to generation, both in spontaneous contexts and as part of local educational curricula. This ensures its continuity and development, turning it into a national symbol of Albanian cultural identity.
The inclusion of K’cimi i Tropojës on UNESCO’s prestigious list began through an initiative by the “Kërcimi i Tropojës” Association in cooperation with the Tropoja Municipality and the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, as well as the support of the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF).
The preparation of the file was carried out with the broad participation of experts and the local community. Documentation and completion of the file involved field research, creation of a detailed description of the element, collection of archival materials, and testimonies from the community.
The registration of this element on UNESCO’s Representative List helps promote Albanian cultural heritage internationally, ensuring its protection for future generations.
