Following the statement by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, suggesting that there could be attacks before and after the New Year in the northern part of the country, the situation in the four northern municipalities remained calm today. The Deputy Director of Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, stated that while further attacks are possible, the situation is currently calm, although the police presence has increased following the attack on the Iber Lepenc canal. Security expert Arben Dashevci emphasized that Kurti’s statements should be taken seriously.
On November 29, critical infrastructure was attacked.
According to the Kosovo Intelligence Agency, the terrorist Milan Radojičić was behind the attack on the Iber Lepenc canal in the village of Varagë, Zubin Potok. However, despite almost a month having passed since the attack, the state could still be targeted by such actions.
At least this is the warning issued by Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a media conference on Tuesday, when he stated that attacks could occur in the four northern municipalities before and after the New Year.
However, when television crews stayed in the north of Mitrovica on Wednesday, the situation was calm.
Kosovo Police patrols in Car Lazar Square were frequent.
Veton Elshani, the Deputy Director of Police for the northern region, stated that while attacks may occur, the police presence has been significantly increased.
“We have increased our presence since November 30, following the last incident. There have been no incidents since then. We are doing our work, but that does not mean something cannot happen. This is a large territory, 17% of Kosovo’s territory. We have good cooperation with the Border Police and specialized units here, but that does not mean that incidents will not occur,” Elshani told Tëvë1.
The Kosovo Police have increased their presence in the four northern municipalities, where, according to the police, the situation remains fragile.
