Finland’s Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, said on Wednesday that authorities in the country are investigating the damage caused to subsea power cables connected to Estonia.

An unplanned outage occurred on the ‘Estlink 2’ line during the day, according to a statement from the Finnish company Fingrid, reducing its production capacity to 358 megawatts, down from the full capacity of over 1,000 megawatts.

“Although we are in the Christmas holiday season, the authorities are on standby to investigate the matter,” said Prime Minister Orpo in a post on the social media platform X.

He added that the outage did not affect Finland’s electricity supply.

Authorities in the region have been on high alert to respond to potential sabotage incidents following a series of damages to energy cables, gas pipelines, and communication links in recent years. However, subsea cables often face technical issues and disruptions caused by accidents.

“A probe into the incident has been initiated,” said Arto Pahki, a manager at Fingrid, in a statement. /VOA
