In line with current legislation, the Kosovo Assembly must conclude its work one day before the official start of the election campaign, which is the 11th of January. This marks the end of the eighth legislature’s activities, leaving behind numerous challenges and several unfinished legislative projects.
According to the Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI), the Assembly passed 282 laws during this term. However, its efficiency was hampered by a lack of accountability and frequent disagreements among deputies.
What Will Happen to the Unfinished Bills?
Eugen Cakolli from KDI explained that all unfinished bills will return to square one, while international agreements will need to be reintroduced by the incoming government. He added that, unless an extraordinary session is convened, the Assembly effectively completed its work with its final session in December.
Call for Greater Accountability
Cakolli emphasized that the next legislature must be more efficient and accountable to the citizens. He suggested that the Assembly follow a more structured work calendar and implement disciplinary measures to enhance productivity.
Meanwhile, Kosovo’s citizens will head to the polls on February 9 to elect a new Assembly.
