Billionaire Elon Musk has sparked political controversy in Europe, drawing sharp criticism from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer after accusing the British government of failing to prosecute child exploitation cases. The allegations were made in a series of posts on Musk’s social media platform, X, and have intensified debates on sensitive political issues.
Musk, a known ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, accused the UK government of complicity in alleged failures to prosecute so-called grooming gangs over a 20-year period. These gangs, reportedly comprising men of Pakistani origin, were involved in the sexual exploitation of minors.
Accusations Without Evidence
Musk’s claims, shared without supporting evidence, have been criticized as inflammatory. He specifically targeted Starmer, alleging that during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions, he failed to address these crimes adequately.
Starmer responded firmly, stating, “Those who spread lies and disinformation are not interested in justice or victims—they are only serving their own agendas.” Starmer emphasized that as Director of Public Prosecutions, he reopened numerous child abuse cases and led the first prosecution of an Asian grooming gang.
Wider Political Implications
Analysts suggest Musk’s remarks align with his broader support for far-right and populist figures across Europe. Recently, Musk also criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and expressed support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Tim Bale of Queen Mary University in London noted that Starmer is treading carefully due to Musk’s association with Trump. “Starmer cannot openly confront Musk without risking a backlash, especially given Musk’s influence,” Bale said.
Musk also targeted Nigel Farage, a prominent Trump ally and leader of the UK Reform Party, stating that Farage “doesn’t have what it takes” to lead after he declined to support imprisoned activist Tommy Robinson.
Calls for Regulation
European lawmakers have raised concerns over X as a platform for spreading disinformation. Some have called for regulatory action, though Bale remains skeptical about its enforcement. “Musk portrays himself as a champion of free speech, and many politicians are hesitant to challenge that narrative,” Bale said.
As Musk continues to involve himself in European politics, his controversial statements are fueling debates on free speech, accountability, and the role of tech magnates in shaping political discourse.
