Russia has welcomed Donald Trump’s comments regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, which the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, called a concern for Moscow.
Trump stated in January that he understands Russia’s position on Ukraine’s NATO bid, criticizing outgoing President Joe Biden for allegedly changing the U.S. stance on Ukraine’s membership.
Lavrov highlighted that this marked the first time the U.S. was openly willing to discuss the issue of NATO expansion, with Trump recognizing the push for Ukraine’s inclusion as a key mistake in the crisis.
Ukraine has persistently sought membership in NATO, but no timeline has been set by the member states. Meanwhile, Russia demands that Ukraine abandon its NATO aspirations, seeing any move toward membership as a direct threat.
