In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an effort to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, said, “He (Putin) wants the people to stop dying. All those deaths. Young people, beautiful people. They’re like your children, two million of them… and for no reason.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he could neither confirm nor deny a phone call between Putin and Trump. He added that Washington and Moscow communicate through various channels, and the Trump administration has been increasing its activities in this regard.
“Perhaps there is something I don’t know,” said Peskov.
Trump, when asked about the frequency of his calls with Putin, suggested that it was better not to specify but confirmed a “good relationship” with his Russian counterpart. The American president hopes that Putin’s war in Ukraine, which is nearing its third anniversary, will end “soon.” Trump had previously promised to end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office.
“I hope it will be soon. Every day people are dying. This war is very bad in Ukraine. I want to end this cursed thing,” Trump said to the New York Post.
Earlier this week, Trump stated that talks aimed at ending the war had “progressed significantly.”
