The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has announced that she will work with the newly appointed EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Peter Sørensen, to make the process more effective.
Referring to longstanding criticisms of the dialogue format, which has been facilitated by the EU in Brussels for 14 years, Kallas acknowledged the need for improvements.
“We have just appointed Peter Sørensen as the EU’s Special Representative for the Belgrade-Prishtina dialogue. In March, I will meet with him to determine how we proceed. It is clear that normalization of relations is essential for both countries. If they hope to advance on their European path, such normalization is unavoidable,” Kallas told reporters from 20 European news agencies.
She also emphasized that the political landscape in Kosovo, following the recent elections, will play a role in shaping the future of the dialogue.
“I hear criticisms of the current format, and I truly want to explore how we can make it functional. I have addressed this issue with Serbia’s Foreign Minister, who assured me of their commitment to investing time in normalization. At the same time, we have just had elections in Kosovo, so we will see how the new government is formed and how we move forward,” Kallas stated.
