The Albanian government has officially decided to ban the social media platform TikTok for one year. The decision was announced by Minister of Education Ogerta Manastirliu following a government meeting on Wednesday.
According to the minister, the Council of Ministers has made the decision to temporarily suspend access to TikTok in Albania. The suspension will last for 12 months.
Manastirliu emphasized that the decision focuses on protecting children and ensuring public safety in the digital environment. The National Cyber Security Agency will implement the ban within a short period, which is expected to last a few days or a maximum of one week.
“We have analyzed the impacts of these platforms, especially concerning children’s health and cases of physical violence. The working group has included all relevant authorities, considering the facts and elements that were of utmost importance. As a result, we recommended closing or limiting access to TikTok for a 12-month period, which will allow us to take further actions. We have also started communication with TikTok to take additional measures, such as implementing filters to prevent the promotion of undesirable behaviors,” said Manastirliu.
