The United States and the European Union have opposed the recent decisions made by the authorities in the Republika Srpska entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The reaction from Washington and Brussels comes a day after the president of this Serb entity in Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, decreed unconstitutional laws, passed by the Republika Srpska Assembly, which prohibit the activities of the Court and Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the State Investigation and Protection Agency, and the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia.

Among these laws is one concerning the Special Registry and the transparency of the work of non-governmental organizations.

The U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo stated that Washington is “deeply concerned” about Dodik’s signing of the decrees.

“To be clear, this is a deliberate provocation against the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina and represents a direct threat to the stability and security of Bosnia, as well as to the strategic objectives of the United States,” said the U.S. Embassy.

Washington urged all political leaders and those behind these decisions to refrain from “engaging in further destabilizing actions and provocative rhetoric.”

“Engage in a constructive and responsible political dialogue. Support Bosnia’s democratic institutions and respect the rule of law. Also, contribute to reducing political tensions,” said the response from the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo.
