A police riot brigade has appeared in full gear at the student camp in Pionirski Park near the Serbian Presidency, as tensions rise ahead of the major anti-government protest.
The camp, initially set up by students claiming they wanted a peaceful place to study, has become a focal point of political friction. On the opposite side, citizens dissatisfied with the camp’s presence have gathered, though the situation remains calm apart from occasional verbal exchanges.
This comes after Milovan Drecun, a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), warned that “paramilitary hooligan criminal formations” would allegedly attack the students in the park on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
The deployment of riot police adds to the already heightened tensions in Belgrade, where opposition groups have accused authorities of using various tactics to suppress protests and intimidate demonstrators.
