Intensifying cooperation with Hungary, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has expressed a desire to create a military alliance or pact.
Following Vučić, the president of the Republic of Srpska (RS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, warned that this Bosnian entity would seek to be included in a military and security agreement with Serbia and Hungary.
Hungarian officials have not commented on these intentions from Belgrade and Banja Luka, even though Hungary is already a member of a military alliance, NATO.
“No one paid attention to this issue here, so we can conclude that this is more of a matter of the heart for the regime in Belgrade than for the one in Budapest,” assessed Gabor Bodis, a journalist from Budapest, for REL.
In Belgrade, the defense ministers of Serbia and Hungary, Bratislav Gashić and Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, signed a bilateral military cooperation plan for 2025 on April 1.
This document formalizes the Strategic Cooperation Agreement in the field of defense between the two countries, which was reached in 2023.
After the signing, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić declared that he believes the agreement for joint activities will continue with further rapprochement and the creation of a military alliance or pact between Serbia and Hungary.
Vučić stated that he and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wish to continue accelerating defense cooperation, “especially considering everything that is happening in Europe and the world.”
