Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sharply criticized the European Union following recent comments by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz regarding the lifting of restrictions on the use of German-supplied weapons by Ukraine.
In a direct statement, Lavrov emphasized that the decision to send long-range weapons was not new but had been planned earlier and kept secret. He accused European leaders of following a dangerous agenda at the expense of regional stability and peace negotiations.
“This decision reveals the quality and mindset of those currently in power in Europe. They are willing to sacrifice stability for narrow political interests,” Lavrov stated.
He further claimed that Western governments are deliberately undermining the diplomatic process aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, asserting that peace is not in their interest as it threatens their political careers.
“If the war ends, their political careers are over. They place their personal interests above their people and continental security,” he added.
In contrast to his critical stance on Europe, Lavrov adopted a more moderate tone when speaking about former U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives. He praised Trump’s efforts to find a solution and suggested that communication breakdowns are the result of European allies deliberately undermining Trump’s moves.
“Trump wants tangible results. When he sees that Europeans are obstructing his efforts, it’s only natural that his rhetoric escalates,” Lavrov said.
He concluded by urging the EU to “stop sabotaging the path to peace,” stressing that actions matter more than public statements.
These remarks come as Russia dramatically intensifies its airstrikes on Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials and international observers, the most recent aerial assault was one of the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Analysts note that Lavrov’s statements are part of an ongoing diplomatic strategy aimed at swaying international public opinion and reinforcing Russia’s narrative about the Ukraine conflict.
