Announcing the United Kingdom’s recognition of the Palestinian state, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had met with British families of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and witnessed “the torture they endure every day and the pain that strikes deeply in the hearts of people in Israel and the United Kingdom.”

“Hostages must be released immediately and we will continue to fight to bring them home. Our call for a genuine two-state solution is the exact opposite of Hamas’s hateful vision. This solution is not a reward for Hamas, because it means that Hamas can have no future, no role in government and no role in security,” he said.
