A shocking case has been uncovered in Central Greece, where a 62-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly burying her mother in a stable in order to continue collecting her pension and disability payments.

The Case in Viotia

The incident took place in a village in Viotia, where the suspect, who worked as a manager at a local Citizens’ Service Center (KEP), admitted to police that her 91-year-old mother had died of natural causes in their home in 2023. Instead of reporting the death, she allegedly hid the body and buried it near her house, with the help of a foreign national whose identity has not yet been revealed.

Financial Motive Behind the Crime

The woman confessed that she was struggling with serious financial problems and decided to conceal her mother’s death in order to continue receiving her disability allowance and pension. From the summer of 2023 onwards, residents of the village no longer saw the elderly woman, raising suspicions that ultimately led to a complaint being filed with the Thebes Prosecutor’s Office, which then launched an official investigation.

Shocking Discovery During Exhumation

On Saturday, the suspect attempted to present another elderly woman with health problems as her mother. However, she later admitted the truth to the police, revealing that she had buried her real mother in a stable next to the family home.

A judicial officer ordered an exhumation, during which police discovered human remains wrapped in sheets.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The 62-year-old is expected to appear before the Prosecutor of Thebes. She faces charges of:

  • Failure to report a death,
  • Providing false testimony,
  • Negligent homicide,
  • Fraud.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the identity of the man who assisted in concealing the burial.
