Palestinian Ambassador to Albania, Sami Mhanna, has explained why the State of Palestine has not recognized the independence of Kosovo.
In an interview with Euronews Albania, Ambassador Mhanna was asked why, despite strong Albanian support for the Palestinian cause, Palestine has yet to recognize Kosovo since its declaration of independence in 2008.
He emphasized that Palestine has no issues with the people of Kosovo and maintains good relations with Kosovar citizens.
“Ever since Kosovo opened its embassy in Jerusalem, we consider it a blatant violation of international law. That is why Palestine does not recognize Kosovo,” the ambassador stated.
On Albania’s position in international forums, where it often remains neutral regarding the Palestinian issue, Mhanna expressed disappointment.
“I have spoken with President Bajram Begaj, who supports us. I would like the Albanian government to support us more. I do not understand why Albania abstains in international forums and why it has turned its back on us, when the conflict is not between Israel and Hamas, but between Israel and our people,” he said.
The ambassador also expressed his hope that Albanians would speak more openly about the Palestinian issue and demonstrate greater solidarity.
“I do not believe that Prime Minister Rama is pro-genocide, and this is a wise approach on his part,” he added.
