Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has responded positively to the announcement of a planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, which aims to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

“The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is great news for the peace-loving people of the world,” Orbán wrote on X on Thursday. “We are ready!

President Trump announced that during a lengthy phone call with Putin, the two leaders made “major progress” and agreed to meet in the Hungarian capital.

The summit in Budapest will follow a series of meetings next week between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian counterparts, focusing on key diplomatic and security issues.

Meanwhile, Trump is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, as Zelensky seeks to persuade Washington to supply Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles and other advanced weapon systems.

Trump described his latest call with Putin as “very productive,” noting that Putin congratulated him on his major peace achievement in the Middle East.
