The Croatian daily Večernji list has reported on Syria’s recognition of Kosovo’s independence, describing the move as a “cold shower” for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, given the traditionally strong political and economic ties between Damascus and Belgrade, writes Gazeta Express.

The outlet recalled that under the regime of Bashar al-Assad, Syria maintained close relations with Moscow and Vladimir Putin, consistently aligning itself with Russia and Iran in support of Serbia’s position on Kosovo.

“Serbia, which did not impose sanctions on Syria despite Western pressure, has maintained good political and economic relations with Damascus. Alongside Russia and Iran, Syria was among the few countries that strongly supported Serbia’s territorial integrity. For this reason, many in Belgrade see today’s recognition of Kosovo by Damascus as a betrayal and a serious blow to Serbia’s foreign policy,” Večernji list wrote.
