Serbian news outlet N1 has called out President Aleksandar Vučić for failing to deliver on a claim he made shortly after Syria officially recognized Kosovo as an independent state.
On 30 October, just a day after Syria’s recognition, Vučić confidently hinted at a “joyful news” for Serbia regarding the Kosovo issue, stating that something significant would occur in the next ten days.
“In the next ten days, we will have something to make them happy. This is a marathon, not a 50-meter race. And considering whom we are competing against, we are doing quite well,” Vučić said in Samarkand.
However, ten days have now passed without any developments, prompting N1 to note that Vučić’s “surprise” has failed to materialize.
In its reporting, N1 highlighted the inconsistency, writing:
“Reacting to Syria’s recognition, President Aleksandar Vučić announced that Serbia would soon have ‘something to make them happy,’ but ten days have passed and Vučić’s ‘promised surprise’ has yet to arrive.”
During his initial remarks, Vučić also downplayed the significance of Syria’s recognition of Kosovo, calling it predictable, and implying that Syria’s actions were directed by other powers:
“They behave as they are instructed,” Vučić said at the time.
This is not the first time President Vučić has been criticized for vague political promises, with analysts often noting that such statements are more geared toward shoring up political support than reflecting real diplomatic strategy.
