European Council President Antonio Costa stated at the annual Delors Institute conference that Europe cannot accept U.S. interference in its internal political affairs.

“If we are allies, we must act as allies, and allies do not threaten to interfere in each other’s domestic politics,” Costa emphasized, referring to recent political tensions between the European Union (EU) and the United States.

He added:

“We cannot accept this threat of interference in Europe’s political life.”

Costa further noted that the U.S. and EU no longer share the same vision for the international order.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell Kajas added that while the EU and the U.S. do not always share the same positions on certain issues, the fundamental principle remains:

“We are the greatest allies and must stand together.”
