In her annual address to Parliament, President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, referring to the tragedy in Kočani, said that the trauma from this event will be carried by everyone. She emphasized that the fire in which 63 people lost their lives exposed spontaneous decision-making, a lack of systemic culture, impunity, and highlighted the urgent need for a deep reassessment.
“Kočani was not just a tragedy; that case led us to the wall of shame,” Davkova said.
She called on political parties and politicians to stop daily clashes at the expense of the judicial process related to Kočani. Through this judicial process, she stated, it will become clear whether the judiciary will regain or permanently lose the trust of citizens. Not by coincidence, she added, negotiations with the EU begin and end with justice.
