The Kosovo Police arrested the suspect on Friday for hooliganism and disrupting the constitutional order of Kosovo, as reported by the country’s Special Prosecution. The suspect, identified by the initials M.D., was arrested in the Mitrovica region following a multi-month investigation. He will remain in detention for 48 hours.

The suspect faces multiple charges, including participation in activities against the constitution, endangering persons under international protection, involvement in a crowd committing criminal acts, hooliganism, and assault on an official.

The prosecution did not specify where or when the alleged crimes were committed. However, in the past, dozens of people have been arrested for similar offenses related to the May 29, 2023 attack in Zvečan against KFOR soldiers. Most of them were released while awaiting trial.

In May 2023, protests by Serbs in northern Kosovo against ethnic Albanian mayors in four northern municipalities escalated into clashes with KFOR troops. During these clashes, 93 KFOR personnel were injured, some of them severely.

Due to the violence in the north in May of the previous year, as well as the attack on the Kosovo Police in Banjskë, Zvečan in September, KFOR has increased its military presence in Kosovo. Currently, there are about 4,700 KFOR soldiers stationed in the region.

KFOR is the third line of defense for Kosovo’s security, following the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).
