The recount of 914 polling stations from the December 28 elections has begun at the Counting and Results Center, and according to the Central Election Commission (CEC), the process is expected to take 12 to 14 days, reports Rks News.

In 10 municipalities, 100% of polling stations will be recounted, while in 28 others, only 10% will undergo a recount.

This was announced by the CEC spokesperson, Valmir Elezi, during a press conference.

“At the Counting and Results Center, the ballots are being recounted according to the list of polling stations for which the CEC decided a recount is required. Specifically, the CEC has decided to recount 914 polling stations out of 2,557 where the regular voting process took place in the snap elections for the Assembly of Kosovo held on December 28, 2025. The recount at the CRC will take place at 20 counting tables, with an average of 80 ballot boxes expected to be recounted per day. Counting the 914 polling stations, which represent 36% of all polling stations, may take 12 to 14 days,” Elezi explained.

He clarified that the recount will not take place uniformly across all municipalities, as the CEC’s decision provides for different approaches depending on the municipality.

“According to the CEC’s decision, in 10 municipalities, 100% of polling stations will be recounted (Dragash, Kaçanik, Leposaviq, Prizren, Skënderaj, Shtime, Ferizaj, Vushtrri, Mamushë, and Ranillug), while in 28 other municipalities, only 10% of polling stations will be recounted (Deçan, Gjakovë, Gllogoc, Gjilan, Istog, Klinë, Fushë Kosovë, Kamenicë, Mitrovicë e Jugut, Lipjan, Novobërdë, Obiliq, Rahovec, Pejë, Podujevë, Prishtinë, Shtërpcë, Suharekë, Viti, Zubin Potok, Zveçan, Malishevë, Junik, Hani i Elezit, Graçanicë, Partesh, Kllokot, and Mitrovicë e Veriut),” he emphasized.

According to the CEC spokesperson, the decision to recount was made after discrepancies were identified during the verification of votes for candidates in certain polling stations.

“This CEC decision follows findings from the verification of candidate votes in 33 polling stations, which showed that the votes counted at the Municipal Counting Centers did not match the votes recorded on the ballots,” he said.

Elezi added that the main purpose of the recount is to maintain the credibility of the elections and ensure the will of the citizens is accurately reflected.

“The CEC’s decision to recount votes aims to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the electoral process. This step is intended to verify every vote and ensure that the final results fairly and reliably reflect the will of the voters,” Elezi said.

The CEC’s decision to recount 914 polling stations followed an internal verification report covering 2% of polling stations from the snap elections for the Assembly of Kosovo held on December 28, 2025.

According to the report, on January 10, 2026, the CEC Secretariat reviewed video recordings from the counting tables at the Municipal Counting Centers and identified cases of discrepancies in candidate votes.

Following this, the Secretariat conducted an internal verification of candidate ballots in 2% of polling stations, or 52 polling stations across all municipalities of Kosovo. By the end of Monday, January 12, 2026, 33 polling stations had been verified, showing that the votes for candidates counted at the Municipal Counting Centers did not match the votes recorded on the ballots.
