U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting yesterday with leaders of the Arab and Muslim world on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, with the main focus being an end to the war in Gaza.
The American leader told reporters this was the most important meeting for him because, as he emphasized: “it will end something that perhaps should never have started.”
He added: “We want to end the war in Gaza. We will end it. Maybe we can end it immediately.”
The meeting was attended by leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan. Trump noted that “all the big players were there except Israel, but it will be next,” referring to his planned meeting next week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
Trump also praised the speech of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Assembly, where he had stressed that peace requires guaranteeing Israel’s security.
On the other hand, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the meeting with Trump as “very fruitful.” He said a joint statement would be published and expressed satisfaction with the results, without providing further details.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates announced that the focus of the meeting was ending the war in Gaza and achieving a sustainable ceasefire, as well as the release of hostages and steps to address the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn area.
