Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he will urge Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Russia when they meet next week at the United Nations in New York, while calling on Ukraine’s allies to “stop wasting time.”
Zelensky said he expects additional sanctions if Vladimir Putin refuses to meet him for face-to-face talks or agree to a ceasefire.
“If the war continues and there is no movement toward peace, we expect sanctions,” he declared.
Speaking to a group of journalists in Kyiv, including The Guardian, Zelensky expressed frustration over the slow pace of international action.
He argued that tying potential U.S. sanctions to demands that European states act first only weakens pressure on Putin.
“President Trump expects strong actions from Europe. I think we are losing too much time if sanctions are not imposed or if no steps are taken. This is something we very much expect from him [Trump],” Zelensky said from his presidential office.
