In recognition of World No Tobacco Day, the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (IKSHPK) held a press conference where they called for new and stricter measures against the influence of the tobacco industry, especially on young people.

The Acting Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, stated that tobacco continues to be one of the most serious public health challenges. He announced plans to increase inspections in areas where smoking is prohibited.

“Tobacco causes severe health consequences. Over 8 million people worldwide die due to its use. In Kosovo, tobacco use has declined compared to 2011. IKSHPK has conducted studies and will soon release new data on tobacco use among youth. But this is not enough. Despite challenges, there have also been results, such as the increase in excise taxes, inspections, and now we expect to increase the number of inspectors to step up enforcement in smoke-free areas,” he said.

Arben Lila from the Center for Advocacy and Development (KADC) said the tobacco industry is using increasingly sophisticated tools to target young people.

“We are here today to reaffirm our support for the new Draft Law on Tobacco Control, which includes essential and necessary measures to protect younger generations: a complete ban on advertising and promotion of tobacco and nicotine products, including on digital platforms; implementation of plain packaging to eliminate any visually appealing effects; and a ban on sweet fruity flavors specifically targeting children and youth. This law is a bold but necessary step,” he said.

IKSHPK spokesperson Faik Hoti said that research results show a decrease in tobacco use since the tobacco control law came into effect.

“Since the law on tobacco came into force, the research conducted by the institute, fortunately, has shown what the law aimed to achieve: a reduction in its use. What we need to do more is to stop the advertising (of tobacco),” he said.

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed globally each year on May 31, aiming to raise public awareness about the dangers of tobacco use.
