India’s Bureau of Aircraft Investigation has released the preliminary report on the Air India aviation accident that occurred in June, ending in a major tragedy.
The aircraft, which had taken off from Ahmedabad Airport en route to London, barely managed to lift off the runway before crashing back to the ground, resulting in the deaths of 260 people. Only one passenger survived the crash.
The investigators’ report emphasizes the actions of the cockpit crew. According to the document, both fuel control switches—used to shut off the engines—were found in the position that cuts fuel flow, which led to the engines shutting down during takeoff. This position is normally used only after landing or in cases of technical emergencies.
Footage and recordings from the cockpit reveal a moment of confusion between the pilots. One is heard asking, “Why did you shut it off?”, while the other responds, “I didn’t.” The report does not specify which pilot said which phrase.
At the time of takeoff, the first officer was flying the aircraft, while the captain was acting as the supervising pilot.
